When the snow glistens in the winter sun, and the clear mountain air and the snowy winter scenery makes the region into a pure Winter fairytale, this is the time to enjoy your winter holiday in Salzburg.
Whether you want a relaxing or active winter holiday in Zell am See, we have the right thing for everyone. There is not only skiing in Zell am See, but also a host of other activities and winter sports available.
In winter, when the Zell lake is covered by a thick layer of ice, there is nothing standing in the way of having a walk on the lake, or having a go at iceskating. Be brave and step out onto the ice, you won’t regret it! Slide across the ice, surrounded by the Alpine panorama, and enjoy the fabulous views.
There is also an indoor ice rink in Zell am See providing perfect ice conditions throughout the year.
There is a 200 km network of cross-country ski trails in the region for all Nordic sports fans, whether in classic or skating style, from the easy trail for beginners through to the training trail on the glacier, there is something suitable for everyone.
Enjoy the view and the activity between glacier, mountain, and lake whilst gliding through the snowy winter landscape.
The 5 km Westloipe ski trail is especially suitable to start on, and begins in Kaprun. Experienced cross-country skiers might prefer the high altitude trail on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, and once the light has faded, there are 5 km of night ski trails available (current cross country ski trail status).
Suitable equipment is available from the local cross-country ski hire shops, and you can get tips on technique whether you are a beginner or advanced from the cross-country ski schools offering courses for all levels of ability.

Kohlschnait, with a 3 km long lit natural toboggan run offers you one of the most beautiful toboggan runs in the whole of Salzburg.
The idyllic walk up to the Kohlschnait-Hütte, or the lift up with the Rodel-Express through the snow-covered winter landscape is part of the tobogganing experience. After a winter walk on the tobogganing mountain, enjoy a hot Glühwein in the cosy atmosphere of a mountain hut. Highlights for young and old alike are the 14 station lit winter archery course and the tube sliding run that gives adults the chance of being children again.
There are many other natural toboggan runs in the Zell am See-Kaprun region.
Let yourself be enchanted away by the magical glistening winter scenery and set out with snow shoes through the snow-covered scenery. There is a well-developed network of routes taking you to the furthest parts of the region, where mountain huts await you with their warm, friendly atmosphere.
An overview of the winter walking paths in the region is available in Map Zell am See - Kaprun Winter Walking Map.
From the hotel, you can step out straight onto the banks of the frozen over Zell lake and set out along the lakeside promenade through the white splendour, and watch the ice skaters and figure skaters.
Those who would rather experience the environment with others can take part in a guided snowshoe or winter walk, taking you up onto the routes on the Schmittenhöhe. From the snow-covered peak you can enjoy looking out over the whole region.
The mountain and ski guides of the region are our expert partners for your expeditions through the snow-covered landscape.
Gliding on a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the romantic winter idyll takes you into a real life fairytale. As the sleigh bells ring, cuddle up together, wrapped in a warm blanket and ride through the snow-covered landscape. Pure romance.
